Day 4: Friday - Gloss: Noisy Things

Day four of rae jam almost done - noisy today as I spent a fair amount of time trolling through my various itch.io asset packs - for sounds!

Coin Chaos 006 has been uploaded which includes:

Tinka Tinka Tink:

The game now has a mixture of sounds added for:

  • Coins hitting coins and walls.
  • Coins being collected or lost in the pocket.
  • Game Over!
  • The level being completed.

The sounds are simple, but I think they add something to the game. What is missing is some kind of relaxing ambient background music. I've had a quick look at itch assets but nothing stands out immediately. Recommend some music assets if you know of any good ones!

Infinite Random Levels:

A slightly lazy addition, but after the mystery test level - where you can see coin cracking has been improved - there are an infinite number of randomly generated levels to play. This is a short term solution to prevent the game from crashing past level 3.

Things to Add:

I really need to focus on more game mechanics to improve the actual game-play, and I've already planned the last two days of the game jam for just this. I'd like to try:

  • A coin flick power meter: This is an obvious addition that has a lot of merit like giving you the player an additional timing based challenge, more of a sense of agency,  and fine grained control over the coin launch. That means I could add interesting things like static on-board targets to hit.
  • Coin abilities? I've started on 'weak' coins that crack, so lets finish that an make them disappear after too many strikes. That's a challenge though. I'd also like to think of ways collecting certain coins could give you boons - other than an additional coin.
  • Level Stats: This could be fun. Shots taken, coins collected, time taken are all simple obvious stats to gather and present when a level is completed.

Until tomorrow night, enjoy!
